The first segment is called the 'forward sortation area' FSA and is used to identify the geographic location of the address. The first character of the FSA represents the 'postal district', which splits the country into major geographic regions — for example, 'N' is used for all of South-Western Ontario and 'V' is used for all of British Columbia. The second character is used to separate rural and urban regions. The number '0' denotes a rural region with numbers 1 through 9 representing urban areas.

It's common for rural regions to be 'urbanized', which involves the changing of the '0' to another number. The third character is used to more precisely describe the geographic area of the address. The second segment is called the 'location delivery unit' LDU and represents either a specific address or group of addresses. Sometimes an LDU covers an entire city block, all or part of a high-rise, a small rural community or even a single house.

When writing out the postal address for a location within Canada, the postal code follows the abbreviation for the province or territory. Numbered postal zones were first used in Toronto in As ofToronto was divided into 14 zones, numbered from 1 to 15, except that 7 and 11 were unused, and there was a 2B zone.

Postal zones were implemented in Montreal in By the early s, other cities in Canada had been divided into postal zones, including QuebecOttawaWinnipeg and Vancouver as well as Toronto and Montreal. In the late s, however, the Post Office began implementing a three-digit zone number scheme in major cities to replace existing one- and two-digit zone numbers, starting in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

Toronto's renumbering took effect 1 Mayaccompanied by an advertising campaign under the slogan "Your number is up". Companies changed their mail addressing at their own expense, only to find the new zoning would prove to be short-lived. As the largest Canadian cities grew in the s and s, the volume of mail passing through the country's postal system also grew, to billions of items by the s and tens of billions of items by the mids.

Consequently, it became progressively more difficult for employees who handsorted mail to memorize and keep track of all the individual letter-carrier routes within each city. New technology that allowed mail to be delivered faster also contributed to the pressure for these employees to properly sort the mail. A key recommendation was the "establishment of a task force to determine the nature of the automation and mechanization the Post Office should adopt, which might include design of a postal code".

In DecemberCommunications Minister Eric Kierans announced that a six-character postal code would be introduced, superseding the three-digit zone system. The introduction of the postal code began with a test in Ottawa on 1 April The introduction of such a code system allowed Canada Post to easily speed up and simplify the flow of mail in the country, with sorting machines being able to handle 26, objects an hour. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers objected to the automated sorting system mainly because the wages of those who ran the new automated machines were much lower than those who had hand-sorted mail.

One advertisement in the Toronto magazine Byliner generated controversy by showing a man writing a postal code on the bottom of a thonged woman with the following ditty:. Canada was one of the last Western countries to implement a nationwide postal code system.

A forward sortation area FSA is a geographical region in which all postal codes start with the same three characters. The large populations of both Quebec and Ontario cause both provinces to be subdivided into three and five postal districts, respectively, and each has at least one urban area so populous that it has a dedicated postal district " H " for the Montreal regionand " M " for Toronto.

On the other hand, the low populations in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories NWT mean that even after Nunavut separated from the Northwest Territories and became its own territory inthey continue to share a postal district. The digit identifies the FSA as urban or rural. A zero indicates a wide-area rural region; all other digits indicate urban areas.

The second letter represents a specific rural region, an entire medium-sized city, or a section of a major metropolitan area. A directory of FSAs is provided, divided into separate articles by postal district. Individual FSA lists are in a tabular format, with the numbers known as zones going across the table and the second letter going down the table.

We only wish we had more than nine days to experience all the grandeur that Iceland had to offer. The itinerary, lodgings and optional activities that Nordic Visitor put together on our behalf were all fabulous and contributed to one of our best vacations ever.

We feel fortunate that we connected with Nordic Visitor and cannot recommend its services highly enough. All of our hotels were much higher quality than we would have booked ourselves. They were wonderful and the breakfasts were fabulous. The personnel were so friendly and often went out of their way to help. We appreciated the markings on the maps. The only bit of complaint we had was that the young man at the car rental did not give very good directions to the car garage. It was hard for my husband to walk that far.

We should have called a taxi. The GPS in the car gave good directions.

My husband was not used to the gas saving engine shut off and he thought there was something wrong with the car. I presumed it was to save gas, and he finally got used to it. The best part was that we found where my grandparents had lived and were born.

Thank you for giving us extra time in the locations where we needed to hunt.

Thanks to Cecelia for all your answers ahead of time and for working out the details. The trip was wonderful and the adventure of a lifetime for our age. My husband, fifteen year old son and I just returned from the 10-day Iceland Full Circel self-drive tour.

Iceland is beautiful and unspoiled. The topography is someting we have never seen -- from mountains and glaciers to lava and geysirs and boiling mud pits -- every day we saw somethine unique and amazing. We cannot say enough about Larus and the travel arrangements and information provided by Nordic Visitor.

From the initial contact to departure Larus was professional, prompt and helpful. We had one small glitch with the GPS from the rental car company on the way out of Reykjavik. I called Larus and within 20 minutes we had a new one and were on our way.

While we never had another issue, we knew if we did, it would be solved quickly and easily. The information provided -- a road map with our suggested driving route, hotels and points-of-interest highlighted was invaluable. The guide book with suggested stops and information about every stop was excellent.

We chose the "mid-range" accomodations -- they were all lovely and unique. The amount of driving each day perfectly matched what sights were in the area. We never felt rushed to get to the next stop and never felt like we had too much time.

I am a planner and I could not have planned a better trip. We had the freedom of a self-drive, but the support and coordination of someone who knew the country. As someone who has been to Iceland many, many time (mainly for work) it is great to see how a local firm can be so much better than booking anything else.
